Artek – Stool 60

Reliable seating for everyone

The stackable Stool 60 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933 and manufactured by O.y. Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas. After Artek was founded in 1935, the stool became part of Artek's standard range. In the 1940s, the simple three-legged stool became a huge bestseller. The famous design was created for the library in Viipuri in Finland (now Vyborg in Russia) and went on to travel the world.

The legs are made of wood bent into an L shape – an early success of Aalto's experiments with bending laminated wood. The minimalist, functional design was revolutionary at the time. Instead of the usual steel, architect and designer Alvar Aalto used birch, which was plentiful in Finland. That's why this exceptional stool was affordable even for less well-off families.

Today, the iconic stool is available in a wide range of versions. The original is joined by re-editions by famous designers, posters featuring the stool, children's stools, special editions for special occasions and upholstered versions. To this day, the Stool 60 design has lost none of its original charm and proves itself every day in countless homes as reliable seating for everyone.
