Shower Curtains

Shower curtains – colour for your bathroom retreat

Shower curtains act as a splash guard and protect your bathroom from unwanted flooding – that much is clear. But they also make a wonderfully colourful decorative element, and not only in white-tiled bathrooms. Shower curtains are easy to hang, so you can change them at least as often as your clothes. Find your favourite.

Hanging with shower curtain rods

There are many ways to hang a shower curtain. The most common is the shower curtain rod, which is fixed to the wall at both ends. Rings are then used to hang the curtain on the rod. Some shower curtains already have integrated rings; if not, you can choose between metal and plastic versions. If you want to drill as little as possible, a curved shower rod frame attached to the edge of the bath is a good option. The downside is that a curtain hung this way only provides splash protection on one side.

Washing shower curtains

  • Shower curtains are also affected by limescale. To keep yours hygienic, spray it with shampoo or treat it with bicarbonate of soda. This keeps it looking good for longer.
  • Most shower curtains can be machine washed at 30 °C. A delicate or gentle cycle is best. It's better to skip the spin cycle, as it only strains the material and creases the curtain.
  • A good alternative to the washing machine is a bucket of water and a hygienic cleaner. Let the shower curtain soak for a while, then rinse it with clean water.
  • Air your bathroom regularly. This prevents mould from forming on your shower curtain.

Shower curtains: the finishing touch

If you think shower curtains don't matter much to the overall look of a room, think again. In small bathrooms especially, they can be the most dominant element – an essential bathroom accessory. So it's worth giving it some thought before you buy. In small rooms, avoid curtains that are too dark. Especially in windowless bathrooms, they swallow light and can quickly feel oppressive. The Marimekko Kaiku shower curtain kills two birds with one stone. Its colours are very light and friendly, and the printed landscape makes you feel as if you're looking out onto Scandinavian nature – giving windowless bathrooms a greater sense of space. If your bathroom already has colourful tiles, either choose a simple design or pick up the colours of the tiles. This creates a cohesive look. You can't go wrong with the Ferm Living Grid shower curtain. It measures 180 x 200 cm and features a simple black-and-white pattern inspired by bathroom tiles.

Shower curtains: it's all about the material

Three materials dominate when it comes to shower curtains: polyester, cotton and linen. Polyester curtains are usually very robust, and their glossy surface gives them a high-quality look. They also dry very quickly after a shower. Cotton and linen drape softly. They are not naturally water-repellent, but their inside is usually given a water-repellent coating.
