Beds – how to find the right bed for your home

  1. Bed size and sleeping area
  2. Bed frame and height
  3. Bed accessories: lighting, bedside table and headboard
  4. Alternatives to the classic bed: sofa bed, bed system and daybed
  5. Summary – what to consider when buying a bed

1. Bed size and sleeping area

When choosing a bed, start by deciding on the size. As well as the dimensions of the room, think about how much space you need at night. In Germany, the standard mattress length is 200 cm. A single bed (2) is 90 cm wide, which suits single sleepers or teenagers. A small double bed (3) – known in Germany as a "French bed" – is 140 cm wide with a single mattress and is particularly popular with young adults who have limited space in the bedroom.

In the USA, a bed 160 cm wide is known as a queen-size bed (4). Here, you can choose between one mattress or two separate ones – and the same goes for the slatted base. The classic double bed is 180 cm wide (5) and is fitted with two slatted bases and two mattresses. A width of 200 cm, roughly equivalent to the American king-size bed (6), offers a little more space.

A cot (1) usually measures 70 x 140 cm.

2. Bed frame and height

The bed frame defines the design of the bed. If you like things simple, choose a futon bed (1), such as the Pace bed by Karup Design or the Tiefschlaf bed by Stadtnomaden. A futon bed has no headboard or footboard and sits low, following Japanese tradition.

If you want the bed to be the centrepiece of the room, an opulent four-poster bed (2) such as the ILletto four-poster bed by Opinion Ciatti is a good choice. Draped with fabric, it looks especially cosy and creates an inviting atmosphere.

A box spring bed (3), such as the 130 box spring bed by freistil, usually has a higher sleeping surface, which makes it easier to get up. Thanks to its generously padded headboard, you can also lean back comfortably while reading.
A classic bed with a high headboard and footboard (4) visually frames the sleeper and creates a sense of security.

Looking for a cot, loft bed or classic children's bed for the youngest members of the family? You'll find a wide selection here.

3. Bed accessories: lighting, bedside table and headboard

Flexible accessories let you personalise your bed. A bed with built-in lighting, for example, creates a cosy atmosphere and an eye-catching feature. A shelf at the head end and an attached bedside table offer practical storage without an extra piece of furniture in the room. You can easily change the look of a simple futon bed with a separately available headboard mounted on the wall. Following the mix-and-match principle, you can make your bed as cosy as you like.

4. Alternatives to the classic bed: sofa bed, bed system and daybed

As well as classic beds (3), there are alternatives whose flexibility suits urban, multifunctional living. A sofa bed or daybed (1) can be used as a seat during the day and as a bed at night. Perfect for a teenager's room, as a guest bed or for small flats.

An extendable bed (2), such as the "v" bed by Tojo, can be adjusted in width, so it adapts perfectly to your current living situation.

"Beds that change size are an investment for life. They grow with you – from a single bed to a family bed with room not only to cuddle up with your partner, but also for little night-time visitors." - Viktoria, interior expert

The same goes for stackable bed systems (4), which provide an extra bed in seconds and can be stacked to save space when not in use.
