A lighting series with delicate lines and spherical diffusers
The Flos IC collection explores balance. The series consists of table lamps, wall lights, pendant lights and ceiling lights, all based on a sphere that sits in perfect symmetry at the end of a rod.
Designer Michael Anastassiades explains: "By chance, I saw a video clip of a contact juggler on the internet. He was rolling a few balls around, moving them over his arms and across his fingertips. As I was mesmerised by the magic of his skill, the balls seemed completely motionless. I wanted to capture exactly that moment. That was my starting point."
The contrast between delicate lines and voluminous diffusers, between metal and opal glass, gives the Flos IC collection a charm all of its own. The material recalls times gone by, while the form places it in a new context. The matt opal glass head emits soft, dimmable, glare-free light that spreads evenly through the room – its cosy character makes it particularly well suited to living rooms and bedrooms.
The initials IC refer to codes used by the British police to tell the station the perceived ethnicity of a person stopped in the street. IC1 stands for a white or northern European person, IC2 for a southern European or Hispanic person, IC3 for an African or Afro-Caribbean person, and so on. According to the Cypriot-British designer Michael Anastassiades, this is a playful story used to define the different designs.
