Italian manufacturer of kitchen appliances
Smeg was founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni in 1948 in the town of Guastalla in Italy. The Bertazzoni family worked as blacksmiths for many years before becoming manufacturers of freestanding cookers and kitchen appliances.
The Smeg story began in the post-war period, when needs were changing along with family structures and the new role of working women. The company set out to develop kitchen appliances that made housework easier and, through their design and functionality, became status symbols.
From the 1950s, Smeg's range included gas cookers with automatic ignition, programmable ovens, dishwashers, hobs and built-in ovens. In the mid-1970s, the company also began working with leading architects and designers, creating appliances that went beyond their practical use to become true design icons.
Always focused on the highest standards of quality, technology and design, Smeg – an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla – is known worldwide for Made in Italy excellence. Today, the company is run by the third generation of the family.
