Metal is robust and durable, which makes it ideal for garden furniture. Aluminium, steel or galvanised metal: with very little effort, you can keep garden chairs, tables and lounge furniture looking good for a long time. The best way to care for them depends mainly on the material and its coating.
Powder-coated metal garden furniture
Many steel and aluminium garden furniture pieces have a powder coating. It protects the surface from the weather and also gives the furniture its colour.
For regular cleaning, lukewarm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth are usually all you need. Avoid abrasive cleaners and hard brushes, as they can damage the coating.
If you notice scratches or chips, follow the manufacturer's care instructions – especially for steel furniture – and treat any damage with a suitable touch-up product if necessary.
Caring for galvanised garden furniture
On galvanised steel, a layer of zinc protects the metal underneath from corrosion. This makes the material particularly easy to care for and well suited to outdoor use.
You can remove light dirt with a soft cloth or brush. For heavier dirt, use water and a mild detergent.
Cleaning aluminium garden furniture
Aluminium is lightweight, doesn't rust like iron or steel and is therefore often used for outdoor furniture. Here, too, a soft cloth with water and a mild cleaner is usually enough for regular cleaning.
Avoid harsh and abrasive products that could damage any coating or surface. Only use special polishes or care products if the manufacturer recommends them.
Can metal garden furniture stay outside?
Many metal furniture pieces are designed specifically for outdoor use and can stay outside throughout the garden season without any problem. Even so, storing them in a sheltered place during longer breaks extends their lifespan.
Make sure that moisture doesn't collect for long periods, and follow the manufacturer's individual care and winter storage instructions.
With regular cleaning and a little attention, metal garden furniture will stay looking good for many summers.
