TASCHEN: books on art, architecture and design
The TASCHEN story began in 1980 in Cologne in Germany, when Benedikt Taschen opened the small shop TASCHEN COMICS to sell comic books. Soon the first catalogues were printed and staff were hired.
In 1984, almost broke, Benedikt Taschen borrowed money and bought 40,000 remaindered copies of an English-language Magritte book – and sold every one of them. Further rights were soon acquired and more books sold. The publisher quickly established itself in the niche of high-quality yet affordable books and remains successful in this segment today.
"At TASCHEN, we have two priorities: to produce fantastic and innovative books and to sell them all over the world at fair prices. We don't follow trends – we create them."
Today, TASCHEN offers a wide range of illustrated books and complete series on subjects such as design, art, photography and erotica. The comic shop has grown into an international company with subsidiaries and stores around the world.
